Our touchline chats

31 March 2009

Jim spends most of the football game, or at least when watching Son Number Two, chatting to a fellow parent about music. Their conversations mean nothing to me as I’m far too young to know of the music of which they speak and some of the technical jargon also goes over my head.

However, where I could help was by pointing our friend towards our discount codes. He tells us he has bought from Push Posters, who sell music prints and posters, amongst other on line shops in the past, but wasn’t aware of where he could find codes to save him money! Push Posters have a new code for April giving 10% off, which I’m sure would be handy. The new code is APR394 and can be used right up to the end of April.

Teaching an old dog new tricks

27 March 2009

My Nan is finding it harder to cope with and take in anything different. It really distresses her as she has nothing to refer back to to try and make sense of what is now happening. Today she was ready and waiting for me to take her to the Post Office to pay her electricity bill. It didn’t need paying; it was a statement saying she was in credit and showing the payments Mum had set up to go out of the bank. Read more

Time to buy Sat Nav?

25 March 2009

We have bought a new car and are just waiting for it to be built. We had great fun adding bits and bobs on and thus increasing the price by a couple of thousand! One option was Sat Nav; a touchy, feely screen that looked to sexy not to have. The cost? A mere £1000!!! Luckily for us the lovely salesman told us it simply wasn’t worth it! Yes, a car salesman who was honest and stopped us giving him £1000! Unheard of! We naturally took his advice, especially as it meant that we could have the DAB radio, which will allow us to listen to the football on Radio 5. Oh, and it saved us money too, of course!

Actually, I have resisted Sat Nav for a very long time. Jim is now wondering why I’m interested. The truth is because I am dreadful at finding my way to anywhere. Even local places leave me with a mental blank on how to get there. Thankfully a portable one will not have to cost me £1000. Halfords have some great deals here from less than £100. The offers are constantly changing and definitely worth a lok at if your also in the market for Sat nav.

I feel a nudge at their website is in order for my birthday!

Another TV?

23 March 2009

This time it wasn’t really for us, but for my nan. Over the last few weeks two of her TVs have stopped working. I found the latest casualty when I visited last week. She isn’t able to get out, so she relies on her TV for ‘company’, which is how she describes it. I gave her one of our TVs, which left us short, so we took the opportunity to find a TV with an ipod dock for Son Number Two.

He has an ipod touch, which doesn’t fit in to his old Ipod dock and so to charge it he needed to connect it tot he PC. This wasn’t really practical as we often found the PC left on for days on end! Our research (or more precisely Jim’s as I am a technohpobe)  led us to realise we needed to take the ipod with us and actually try it out on the TVs. Currys had this TV that I reserved for us and off we went to try before we bought!

Sadly when we got there this TV didn’t have the audio out ( I think) that was required for the surround sound that he has. The picture quality was also not as good as TVs at or around the same price, but without the iPod dock. Instead we found this TV (Samsung SM933HD) in Comet, which has a fabulous picture quality. It looks great in white, although, in fairness, we believed we’d bought a black one until we opened the box at home! It was so simple to tune in. Press a button and away it went and even put the programmes in their correct place.

Next we needed a dock for the ipod, which led us on another search. Our local Richer sounds had this Cambridge Audio iPod audio dock for £30, which charges the iPod and plays the sound through the surround sound, but not through the TV, which is not a problem for us. For an extra £10 we got a cute little remote control, which is what every lazy boy needs!

So we have a great little TV for Son Number Two and an iPod dock that does what we need it to do!
