A new cure for dogs pulling on the lead?

17 June 2008

I have found what looks like a great new product from Scotts of Stow. It’s this device called a ‘Tweeter’. At a relatively small cost of just £9.95 it claims it can stop your dog pulling on the lead. We have one such dog; Trooper the master at pulling! He has caused some serious shoulder damage with his pulling on the lead. We have thankfully managed to find a cure; a halti.

The halti fits around his head and makes an amazing difference. He really can not pull and for this reason I would not hesitate in recommending it for other dogs who are difficult to control. However, he does find it irritating and ant to try and rub his face constantly whilst wearing it and once it’s removed he rubs his face for a minute or two. The other snag is that he can get out of it if he really wants to, which is dangerous if that’s all you have hold of. You can, however buy halti’s with a strap that also attaches to your dogs collar, which is a must I’d say. You can also buy a link separately for around £1.

The Tweeter is different. It attaches between the lead and the collar and emits a high pitched sound said to be disliked by dogs whenever they pull. This gets away from the halti causing irritation, but does it work as effectively? I have looked for some reviews, but unfortunately out of 5 reviews there was only one positive. The only complaint is rather a major one unfortunately; the Tweeter breaks easily with severe pulling resulting in a dog completely off the lead. It’s a shame because it sounds like a good idea otherwise. Our dog really is too strong and not to mention stupid! If he found himself off the lead he’d be off and would only return when he was ready, so for us it’s not worth the risk.

It looks like for us we have to stick with the halti collar, which really isn’t a problem.

Buy the Halti collar from:
Pet Supermarket £8.10 - £8.60 or padded £9.20 - £10.20 depending on size.
