A new machine

31 January 2007

BEKO WM5100W Not for me this time, but for my Nan. Hers has had a good innings, but has recently started to ‘clunk’ especially when spinning. It was my job to find a new one that was just like the old one! I found a fantastically priced Beko, which was bought over a year ago now, but it just like this Beko WA510W 1000RPM. We paid £155 with free delivery and a fee of £5.99 to take the old one away. The model we bought doesn’t seen m to be available and there is nothing similar at Dixons. The price for the current mode is from as little as £146.75 plus delivery, although this one from Comet has free delivery and they will take your old machine away for just over £7.

The service we received from Dixons was excellent. They emailed confirmation of purchase and delivery and also posted me a copy of the confirmation. My Nan’s only concern at the time was that she had not heard of Dixons! However, the unheard of Dixons delivered as promised and we plumbed it in, although we could’ve asked Dixons to do this for us at a cost.

The new machine is simple. She didn’t want anything special, no extra programmes, no fancy colours. We have a plain ‘old’ white model that will wash the clothes and that’s that! Now over a year after we purchased it it is still going strong and is incredibly simple to use. As she has been unwell I now use it more than she does. Her complaint when she did first get it was that it didn’t sopin properly. We didn’t really know what she meant at the time, but now I can see. Because it is only a 1000rpm machine the washing is still wet at the end of the cycle. My machine is 1400rpm and the washing is almost dry when you remove it from the macine. Hers is almost dripping, so I see what she means now. I either bring the washing here and spin it in my machine, which is not the answer if this is your only access to a ashing machine, or I spin the clothes again at the end of the cycle.

It is a good machine, but I hadn’t realised or thought through the effect of having a lower spinning speed. With hindsight I would’ve spent a little more and bought at least the 12000rpm model which is available.
