My baby is grown up!

3 September 2007

I know I’m not alone as I often visit ‘parenting sites’, but that didn’t make it any easier for me when my ‘baby’ AKA Son Number Two left this morning for his first day at high school. He was so excited even last night. I was terrified for him. What if he got lost? What if he didn’t make loads of new friends? What if, what if etc? I, of course, kept my fears to myself and packed him off to bed at 9pm. He set his alarm, as he wasn’t going to rely on me any more to wake him. He was too old for that now! I also set mine for 1/2 hour before his just to be sure!

I heard the alarm go off this morning as I lay in my bed. It kept going and going. Son Number Two has never been good at getting up, but I thought I should leave him to it, meanwhile wondering how could he sleep through an alarm for so long! However, a few minutes later came a little tap on our bedroom door. He didn’t know how to switch the alarm off!

He toddled off to school with more than enough time to spare. I hugged him goodbye and sobbed! My baby was growing up! Thankfully I had only a few hours before he returned as today was a half day for just the new children so at just after 12 he came plodding up our drive way, tie swinging from one hand and clutching his newly acquired school planner in the other. He’d survived!

He was full of tales of wrong classrooms, a really cool form tutor and new friends. I felt now was OK to say how nervous I’d been for him and wondered if he’d been nervous setting off on his own? Of course not! Why would he be nervous he’d replied. He was looking forward to it and was merely excited. High school is so much better than primary apparently. OK we’ll see how long that feeling lasts. I’m hoping it can see him through the next 7 years!
